The Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN), which routes local internet traffic within the country’s cyber space, has lowered costs for the Nigerian internet community, the telecoms regulator says.

The IXPN, which is a neutral, not-for-profit organisation, facilitates the exchange of internet traffic between internet service providers (ISPs) and content providers in Nigeria.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), which backed the establishment of IXPN, says that it is promoting high bandwidth at lower cost in the country. 

IXPN ‘ensures high-speed internet within Nigeria’

The NCC, in collaboration with the IXPN, has supported the establishment of Point of Presence (PoP) in remote locations across the country to ensure delivery of high-speed internet access and localised internet traffic with low latency, the telecoms regulator says in a report on its website highlighting key Internet Governance programmes underway in Nigeria. 

While this improved services and application performance at the exchange point, NCC says that one of the major benefits of the IXPN is the high bandwidth available at a lower cost, which is essential for the growth of local content adoption in Nigeria. 

By reducing the cost of internet connectivity, the telecoms regulator says, the IXPN is helping to bridge the digital divide in the country and improve access to information and communication technologies.

The IXPN has played a crucial role in improving internet connectivity in Nigeria, which has been hampered by high costs and low bandwidth, NCC says. “By providing a neutral platform for ISPs and content providers to exchange traffic, the IXPN has helped to reduce costs and improve the quality of internet services in the country.”

The IXPN has also been involved in several initiatives to promote the adoption of local content in Nigeria, as it has established local content hosting facilities, which provide a platform for local content providers to host their content and make it more widely available to Nigerian audiences.

The IXPN has been working with various stakeholders in the telecoms industry to promote the development of local content, including content providers, regulators, and industry associations. “This collaborative approach has helped to create a supportive environment for local content development and adoption in Nigeria,” according to the Exchange

NCC says that its support for the IXPN has been critical in fostering high bandwidth at lower cost in Nigeria.
