Establisged Knowledge Drives Success In Challenging Cleaning Environments

Leading food and beverage manufacturers are facing increasing pressure to eliminate the risks of product contamination. With stricter hygienic controls required, the key to success is the rigorous and effective cleaning of the process line itself. Clean-In-Place (CIP) systems are universally recognised as the most effective solution for maintaining dependable, consistently repeatable results.

Thermal Mass Flow Meters and Mass Regulators for Gases From Vögtlin’s “Red-Y Smart Series” Control Tomato Ripening With Ethylene

Even the ancient Egyptians knew about the effect of ethylene on the ripening of fruit and made use of it. Today, the fruit-ripening effect of ethylene is also used in agriculture to ripen tomatoes, among other things. To speed up the ripening of these fruits and vegetables you submerge them in a mixture of 96% Nitrogen and 4% Ethylene (mass ratio). You can buy the premixed gas but it is a lot cheaper if you buy a bottle of pure Nitrogen and bottle of Ethylene and mix the gas yourself. This can easily be done with Vögtlin mass flow controllers.

Real-time monitoring with GEA NiSoMate: Continuous inline control of the consistency and quality of liquids during the homogenization process

GEA introduces NiSoMate, a sensor-based technology for product control during the homogenization process. Liquids are continuously analyzed inline for their consistency and quality in real time. This enables direct adjustment of system performance, such as homogenization pressure, resulting in more efficient use of energy in the production process. By implementing this new sensor technology, traditional sampling methods are bypassed, significantly saving time. The patented GEA NiSoMate will be showcased for the first time at this year's Anuga FoodTec, which takes place from March 19 to 22, 2024, in Cologne, Germany.

Best Practices for Clean in Place

In 2011, the increased public awareness of food pathogens contributed in large measure to the passage of the Food Safety & Modernization Act (FSMA), which put into place a far more rigorous set of regulations surrounding food safety than had ever existed. In recent years, equipment cleaning processes employed by the food and beverage industry have come under even more increased scrutiny. This is the result of the widespread publicity around pathogen outbreaks in commercially processed food, including E. coli found in Californian romaine lettuce in 2018, and the presence of Listeria in Blue Bell ice cream in 2015. A drive toward more efficient food production coupled with the increased awareness of food pathogens has led the food processing industry to shift its focus to the equipment cleaning processes—specifically cleaning equipment surfaces that come into direct contact with food.
