MTN Group alerts over impersonation of Chairman

South Africa’s MTN Group says the public should be wary of a scam in which individuals are soliciting for money by posing as Mcebisi Jonas, Group Chairman of the telecoms company.

The leading telecoms group which owns MTN Nigeria, says that the scam involves someone posing as Mcebisi Jonas, Group Chairman or his representative.

MTN Group reveals that the scam involves false requests for funding under the guise of sponsorships or raising funds for various causes, according to a press statement by the telecoms group.

The fraudsters, MTN Group says, have been known to make voice calls from a non-listed number, +27 060 858 3779, and introduce themselves as the MTN Group Chairman of the Board.

MTN has urged the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious calls or communication to their Front Office via email at MTNFrontoffice@mtn.com or by calling 0119123000.

The company has also assured its customers and stakeholders that it is working with law enforcement agencies to investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The public has been advised to verify any requests for funding or donations with MTN’s official channels before making any payments. MTN has reiterated its commitment to protecting its customers and the public from fraud and other malicious activities.
