NCC chief, 6 Governors reach deal to waive telecoms taxes

Dr Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has persuaded six states to waive right-of-way fees in what the telecoms regulator considers a significant milestone for the telecoms industry.

The success is part of Dr. Maida’s persistent efforts to align the NCC’s initiatives with the President’s Renewed Hope agenda over the past year, according to a report of the telecoms regulator’s performance made available to Technology Times by its Public Affairs unit.

According to a report released and signed by Reuben Muoka, NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, one of the notable achievements is the successful negotiation with six states, including Kastina and Nassarawa, to waive the Right of Way (RoW) fees.

RoW is a levy telecoms operators pay for deploying and maintaining fiber optic cables along roadways. This waiver has strengthened the telecoms industry and improved regulatory services, with ongoing efforts to extend this success to more states, according to NCC.

The Commission’s strategies for growing the telecoms include, which include enhancing consumer quality of experience, addressing industry debt issues, and advocating for long-term sectoral challenges, will also see NCC revising its Regulatory Instruments and Licensing Framework to reflect current industry realities.

Under Maida’s leadership, the NCC has implemented its Key Strategic Focus Areas (SFA) to advance the development of Nigeria’s telecoms sector, the telecoms regulator’s spokesman said.

The Commission has balanced the needs of consumers, industry players, and stakeholders, meeting their expectations and driving progress.

Moreover, “the Commission, under Dr. Maida’s leadership, is equally engaging with the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms towards addressing multiple taxation issues in the telecoms sector.”

Following the Ministry of Communications Innovation and Digital Economy (FMCIDE), Reuben said that the NCC has, through its technological innovations and achievements, boosted economic growth and productivity, delivering on the promise of Renewed Hope for all Nigerians.
